Maruja Garrido, flamenco singer and dancer, was born in Caravaca de la Cruz. Her father was the famous singer Niño de Levante and also had another sister called Pepe. They grew up in Cartagena, but Maruja soon moved to Barcelona, where she performed in the famous flamenco bar Los Tarantos. Together with Antonio Gades and with help of Salvador Dali she even did shows at the Paris Olympia. Back in Barcelona she joined the flourishing rumba scene, covering many standards like Guantanamera and Strangers in the Night. She got her biggest hit with Es mi Hombre, put together her own flamenco group and enjoyed huge succes.
