Born María de los Dolores Castellón Vargas, sister to Enrique Vargas 'El Príncipe Gitano', also known as Dolores Vargas or El Terremoto or earthquake....That would be a fine description for this icon or female mediterrenean Power. Way more edge than Lola Flores, en never afraid to experiment with her voice, which at times can pretty frightening. Most of the sixties stuff is more traditional flamenco, but at the end of that decade the rumba fever hits and she starts releasing loads of excellent singles, fusing flamenco and rumba with pop. She also performs my all-time favourite spanish gipsy tune, co-written by her husband Jose Castellon. Achulipu. Comes in a beautifull cover, and still remains relatively easy to be found cheap in the recordbins of Barcelona. Achilipu was also done (among others) by Lola Flores, Las Grecas and the Colombian salsagods Fruko y sus Tesos.
